Misc: Sonny was an exceptional man. He showed love and compassion to all he came in touch with. He was a lot like his mother emotionally and had his dad’s business sense. He is the one person that Lucille wanted to preside over Henry’s funeral. He had so much love and respect for Henry that he was better than any minister could have been. It would have been an irony for the funeral to be in the church. Sonny set up a format and checked it with Lucille and it was held at graveside. I heard from members of the family that it was the most unique funeral they ever attended. There would never be a way to thank Sonny for what he has done. Unfortunately we lost Sonny exactly 6 months and 17 days later.
The world has lost two great men.

Misc: Judy and I went to school together before her dad married my aunt. In fact for about six months we were the best of friends and spent a lot of time together. We even married the best of friends and spent a lot more tome together. Of course we divorced both of them. I divorced first. She and I had our first children from these men. After a period of time we lost contact with each other and one day I was doing some work at the courthouse in San Bernardino, I looked up and there was Judy in a Sheriff’s uniform. She said that she was with the Sheriff’s Department and was now living in the high desert. She has a new husband now and they raise horses. She does some riding still even though she has a lot of
pain from a back or neck problem. I believe that she has retired.

Garland was the third child born to Fanny Idel Smith. He was raised in Arizona, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. He met Rhonda Lynn Hewitt, Rolif in 1966 on a blind date arranged by his brother and her girlfriend. They fell in love almost at first sight. They married in July 1966. They lived in a cute little house on 13th Street in San Bernardino, CA. It was a 2 bedroom and Bobby had his own room. Bobby was two years old when Rhonda & Garland married. In 1967 the family moved to Bloomington, CA so Garland could work in his brother Jessie Smith’s glass and screen shop. Rhonda also worked as the secretary and also made screens and cut glass. Everything seemed to be going fine as the business was really picking up. The men were working every day and the money was rolling in. holding the bag and without any income. They struggled through. The last part of 1969 they moved to Fontana in an apartment on Juniper. They sold their house on Pepper St. in Bloomington, CA for $1200.00 more than they paid for it. At this time this was a lot of money. Garland started working for Kaiser Steel Fabricating Division on San Bernardino Avenue in Fontana. He started making enough money to move them into a little house on Cypress in Fontana. The second house from the corner of Marigold and Cypress on the west- side of the street. While there they purchased their first new refrigerator, mattress, box springs, living room set, washer and dryer. They put a temporary wall in Bobby’s room to make room for the baby they were finally expecting. The baby was a girl that they named Ginger Lee Smith. They gave her the name because of her colored complexion and hair. While living in this house Garland almost lost the ring finger of his left hand, but didn’t. Bobby got
chickenpox at the age of seven and gave them to Ginger who was only 14 days old. (She later got it again at the age of 8) Garland and Rhonda went on vacation in 1972, and a month later Rhonda was pregnant again. The young couple decided the little house was not big enough to handle one more person. So they went out looking for a new house to buy. They found one on Vine Street in Fontana. The lady that sold it to them was Virginia Cooper (Rhonda and Virginia became very good friends almost 10 years later). They purchased the home for $19.500.00 on a 6% loan through the Bank of America. Garland had been in the Navy and could use his VA loan. He was in the Navy and his two brothers were on the same ship (But not
at the same time). Once in the Vine Street home they added another girl to the family. The new daughter was named Tamralene Helene Smith. 2 months later, on a nice spring day the girl’s, Rhonda and Garland were coming back from Rhonda’s parents in Del Rosa, a suburb of San Bernardino, CA. While passing through the intersection of 30th and Vallencia a small pick up truck hit the right front of their 1965 Ford Galixie and threw Tammy into the street a thirty feet and Rhonda into the street about 20 feet. Garland was trapped in the front seat by his boot and was half way out and half way in. Ginger was in the back seat crying but unhurt. Garland had the muscle pulled away from the bone on his right hip and his pelvis. Rhonda suffered with a wrenched pelvis, a gash in the right back of her head from the metal window. Tammy was alright all she had was a couple of scratches on her head and didn’t even leave a scar. All they did to Ginger was to pump her stomach because she had taken
in too much air from crying so long. The hospital let Ginger and Garland go home. They went to Hank and Lucille Hewitt’s, Rhonda’s parents home and stayed over night after they picked up Bobby from school. Rhonda and Tammy stayed in the hospital. Tammy stayed one day and Rhonda two days. The hospital sent Rhonda home with a walker and told her the porgnoses wasn’t good. However, in about eight weeks she started walking by just holding on to walls and furniture. She was well on her way to 100% recovery. In 1976, Garland Lee Smith moved out of the house and by 1976 he and Rhonda were divorced. In 1976, Garland married Della Gomez. In 1984 they had a child they call R. J.
