Obituary: Mary C. Phegley Sherrill, 61, of Linton, formerly of Washington and Plainville, died Friday at Greene County General Hospital in Linton. Born August 10, 1937 in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Zedock Dickerson Veale Sr. and Maude L. Ritter (Veale).
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church. She was a member, past leader and Secretary of Tops.
Survivors are one son, Ralph Phegley of Linton; one daughter Debbie Brunner of Clinton; two brothers, Zed Veale Jr. of Flagstaff, AZ and Ralph Veale of Rockville, MD; four grandchildren and one stepson.
She was predeceased in death by one son, Ernest Phegley Jr.

Misc: Melvin was a master mechanic. He worked on the trucks that were used to build the Hoover-Boulder Dam. He was there from the beginning to the end. He lived in Boulder City while he was there. He was so proud. He also went to Saudi Arabia. He worked on the site of the Suez Canal. He was in Arabia twice. Melvin was an employee of the U. S. Oil Company in Arabia. He brought one of his sisters and nieces a black pearl from Arabia. When he was 18 he ran away from home and joined the Army. While in service he contracted Rhumatic Fever and later received a medical discharge. Later in life he had two heart surgeries. He had them about 10 years apart. The first one surgery replaced the valves in his heart and replaced them with plastic valves. The second surgery the Doctor’s reamed out the arteries of the heart. He developed an aneurysm but stayed in Wadsworth Hospital until his death due to Lung Cancer finally took him to meet his maker. (RLH)

Misc: He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Colton, CA. He was transferred to the LA shop and studied all about diesel engines. He went to Chicago to work. He was inspector for the Southern Pacific shop in LA. Earl was working on a special refrigerator car for P. F. E. a division of Southern Pacific Railroad and he contracted pneumonia and died suddenly. He was only 33 years old and had only been married for 7 years. What a waste to be taken so young.

Aunt Millie was the closest person to an angel that I know. She was kind, loving, compassionate and caring. She always had a smile on her face and love in her heart. Even in times of sadness she would smile and show people how courage she had. She had the strength and the ability to go on no matter what. She and Uncle George Veale had a home near San Bernardino, CA on 41st Street across from her daughter Dorothy Mae West. She met her maker in May of 1992 but not before her husband, son, and daughter had already passed away. She out lived her immediate family. She lived in Lucerne Valley with her daughter-in-law Barbara Veale and her family until she passed away. She went very peacefully as God in his best judgment allowed. God Bless her for all the kindness and may she always be remembered and loved.

He died in Big Bear of a heart attack. He was in the land that he loved and was very close to God at the time of death. God will watch out for him.
